NGA-TOA’S SUCCESS

WINS SQUADRON’S RACE TO TE KUME

TAKES CUP SECOND TIME For the second time in three years the first-class yacht Xga-toa. owned by Mr. G. Winstone, has won the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s annual race to Te Kume for the Tom Alexander Memorial Gold Cup. The very light weather conditions on Saturday suited the yacht and, handled well, the craft deserved her win. lorangi was second in and Thelma third. Last year the race went to Ida. There were 15 starters, comprising the best of the first-class and secondclass fleets. When the gun went at 2.15 there was hardly any wind, but later patchy airs came down from the north. Kotiri and Ida were over too soon and were ordered to recross. The actual start was very straggling.

The order of getting away was as follows, the figures in parentheses being the handicaps and the other numbers relating to the degree of late-ness:—Nga-Toa (sm) 55s late; lorangi (scr) 3m ss; Windward (35m) 3m 355; Thelma (scr) 3m 365; Rang! (40m) Sm 445; Ida (22m) 4m 245; Janet (50m) 4m 41s; Moana (184 m 30s; Ilex (25im) 4m 50s; Ariki (scr) sm; Prize (I7£m) 5m 255; Kotiri (32m) 5m 20s; Scout (50m) 5m 475: Waitangi (18£m) 6m 435; Heartsease (22m) 9m 255. The boats were able, to proceed slowly down harbour and after the flotilla had cleared North Head lorangi was leading, with Thelma second and Windward third, with the rest strung out across to Brown’s Island. The boats were soon practically becalmed. The wind then came quietly from the east for a short time and then returned to the north, the weather being very tantalising. After clearing the Motutapu passage Ariki and Thelma chose the seaward course while lorangi, Nga-Toa and Moana worked the Waiheke shore. At Thumb Point, at the far end of Waiheke, the order was lorangi. Thelma, Nga-Toa, Ariki, Windward, Prize and the others in later order. Sailing easier, Nga-Toa gradually overhauled the leading boats. Thelma and lorangi were sailing close together and making a great race. At the finishing line lorangi put her larger rival about, thus taking second place. Finishing times were: Nga-Toa, 9.43.0; lorangi, 9.45.32; Thelma, 9.45.40; Ariki, 10.46.45; Moana, 10.47.30; Windward, 11.9.0; Kotiri, 11.28.8. Waitangi finished under her engine and the others withdrew. Result; —Nga-Toa, 1; lorangi, 2: Thelma, 3. The officials for the day were; Messrs. J. H. Fra ter, E. J. Owen, 0., Richardson, R. F. Johnston and A. G. Ensoll.

The times .at Te Kume were taken by Mr. J. C. Hewson from Mr. L. M. Nathan’s launch Atatu, which was placed at the disposal of the squadYon. RACE FOR M CLASS The squadron also held a race for its M class patikis, the start being at three o'clock. The start was close, Manene leading Mawhiti by a bowsprit. Manu was handy and Maroro and Maratea in that order. The boats all used spinnakers as leaders to make the most of the airs. The order rounding the Resolution mark was Mawhiti, which lead Manene by about 50secs. Manu lay third. Maratea fourth and Maroro last. The boats made hardly any progress at this stage on the lead to the white light mark in Rangitoto Channel. The order rounding the white light was Manene, Maratea, Manu, Mawhiti. Spinnakers were set for the run to King’s Wharf. Manene continued her lead to North Head, where Maratea closed up on her. Both kept too close inshore and got becalmed. Mawhiti and Manu stood farther out and held the breeze. Maratea and Manene, on getting a start again, carried along on the northern shore and got some nice luffs, the other two boats keeping over toward the southern shore. Finishing times were:—Maratea, 3.9.49; Mawhiti, 5.10.7: Manene, 5.10.22; Manu. 5.10.25; Maroro did not finish. Result: —Maratea, 1; Mawhiti, 2; Manene, 3. Owing to a misunderstanding the mark off King’s Wharf was removed before the race finished, and the matter will be dealt with by the sailing committee.
