BAND CONTESTS OPEN

BIG ATTENDANCE IN DUNEDIN PIPES AND BRASSES Press Association DUNEDIN, Sunday. The New Zealand championship contests for brass and Highland pipe bands were commenced yesterday in fine weather. Nearly £4OO was taken at the gates, representing an attendance of over 6,000 people. The results were: Drum-major Display.—Newton (Christchurch Scottish), 1; Gilchrist (Dunedin Highland), 2; W. Limm (Wanganui), 3. C Grade Quickstep (own choice). — Green Island, 247 points, 1; Waimate, 232, 2; Naseby, 228, 3; Milton, 221, 4; Maniototo, 215, 5; West Harbour, 205. 6; Papanui, 192, 7. Several of the bands lost volume of sound and balance when making their turning evolutions. Paparui and West Harbour lost music points here.

Pipe Band Quickstep (own choice).— Christchurch Scottish, 1775 points, 1; Wanganui, 1745, 2; Wellington, 169, 3; Dunedin, 166, 4; Balclutha, 166, 5; Canterbury, 164, 6; North Otago, 152, 7. Some of the bands were handicapped by small numerical strength. The contests were continued in the Town Hall in the evening, with the following results: Pipe Band Selection.—Wanganui Highland. 87 points, 1: Christchurch Scottish, 865. 2; Dunedin Highland, 86, 3; Wellington Caledonian. 85, 4; Balclutha. 84, 5; Canterbury Caledonian, 78, 6: North Otago, 76. 7. C Grade, own selection.—Maniototo, 128 points, 1; West Harbour, 124, 2: Green Island. 121, 3. Special Prizes.—Hunter Drill Shield: Christchurch Scottish; Adam Munro Cup, Wanganui; Lauder Shield. Wanganui.

From Our Oicn Correspondent THAMES, Today. The Thames Rifle Club shot for the Labarre Cup on Saturday afternoon. The winner turned Lip in Rifleman J. Gordon with a score of 95. The ranges were 200yds and 300yds. Scores: J Gordon (15 handicap), 40 at 200 yds, 40 at 300yds, total 95; G. Hool (15), 38, 40 —93; J. Morrison (3), 43. 42—88; W. Dynes (9), 38, 40—S7; B. Wilson (11), 39, 38—87; P. Trebilcock (2). 41, 41 —84; A. Newland (10), 39, 34 —S 3; A. McLean (scr.), 42, 38—80; B. Gleeson (8), 35, 36—79; J. Hooi (15), 30, 33 —78; J. Donnelly (15), 28. 30 —73; C.
