STRAND
SUCCESS OF “RIO RITA” For the wiseacres who said that musical comedy cannot be transplanted successfully to the screen, “Rio Rita,” Radio’s picture of the century, now in its second week at the Strand Theatre, comes as a bolt from the blue. In every respect it is the finest of the screen’s musical comedies and yet is more like the stage than the cinema from the overture to the opera bouffe finale. It is difficult to know whether to congratulate an old friend or whether to hail a new star in reviewing “Rio Rita.” It took a revelation in the movies and the invention of a new form of entertainment to show us what we had in our midst. As Rita, Bebe Daniels begins a new career, singing the glorious love songs with a lovely lyric singing voice which an experienced prima donna might well envy. And she has never looked so beautiful as in the costumes that bring out her own Spanish blood. Without a doubt, “Rio Rita” will revive Bebe’s one-time great popularity.
