WOMAN DIES FROM BURNS

BLAZING PETROL IGNITES CLOTHING RESCUE ATTEMPT FAILS Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Fatal burns were received by Mrs. Marjorie Wiliet Mather, wife of Mr. Charles P. Mather, as the result of a can of petrol exploding and setting fire to some straw in a shed at the rear of a dwelling in Montreal Street this morning. Mrs. Mather occupied the upstairs flat at the house. She was severely burned through her clothing catching alight, and was taken to hospital in a very critical condition. She died at 8.30 p.m. It is stated that Mrs. Mather was looking for fuel in the shed and struck a match, which ignited petrol leaking from the can. Hearing her screams Miss H. M. Kent, who has the flat on the ground floor, rushed to the scene with rugs, which she dragged from a clothes line. She managed to smother the flames by rolling Mrs Mather on the grass. The shed was only slightly damaged, as the fire brigade arrived soon afterward .
