TWO MONTHS’ GAOL FOR FRAUD LEFT WIFE IN BRISBANE Not long returned from a stay in Australia, where he was married in Brisbane, Frederick Winter was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment when he pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning to a fraud charge. Winter, alias Eric Reed von Sturmer, a seaman, aged 22, was charged with obtaining £ls from the Canadian Knight and Whippet Motor Company on November 14 by means of a valueless cheque. Chief-Detective Hammond said accused had been in the country. He stole the cheque form from his brother-in-law, filled it in and cashed it in tho City through a friend. He had been to Australia since and married in Brisbane, where his wife still was. On his return to New Zealand ho had been arrested in Grevmouth for vagrancy and had just finished serving seven days on that charge. There were previous convictions against him for theft and absconding from licensed service.
'Ho will have to go to gaol,” commented Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., imposing the penalty.
