RAILWAY PRESENTATION

An escritoire was presented to Mr. U- W. Phillips, former chief clerk of the Auckland district engineer’s branch, of the Railway Department, on his retirement after 40 years’ service in the department. The presentation came from members of the staff of the branch, and was made by the district engineer, Mr. J. K,. Lowe. Mr. Phillips joined the department as a cadet in Invercargill in 1889. After serving in Christchurch and Wellington, he was appointed chief clerk in the district engineer’s office in Invercargill in 1915, anid came to Auckland in 1920 to take up a similar position, which he held until the time of his retirement.
