ST. COLUMBA’S CHURCH

TENDERS FOR NEW BUILDING The members of St. Colum’oa’s Anglican Parish, Grey Lynn, have decided to call for tenders for the erection of a new brick church capable of seating about 250 persons. This decision was made at a meeting of parishioners held last evening and the work is to be put in hand as soon as possible. It is explained that with the growth of tho region, the forming of the concrete road, the extension of the tramlines and the increase in traffic from the north, the present site at the corner of Surrey Crescent and Selbourne Road had of late years become too noisy. Consequently the parish had applied to tho Auckland Diocesan Synod for permission to sell the property which had been bequeathed to it by the late Mr. J. Williamson, a part-owner of the Surrey ITills Estate of which it was a portion. The sanction obtained, the new* site had been acquired from the St. John’s College Trust Board with the funds realised. The sale of the present church property realised approximately £5,670. OX this sum £1,440 has been expended on the new section, and this, together with expenses attendant to the deals, has reduced the amount available for the new building to something below £ 4,000. However, with the addition of certain sums from other sources, the £4.000 mark will nearly be reached. The vicar and the secretary were-ap-pointed a sub-committee to act with the architect in calling for tenders. Mention was made of the desirability of erecting a vicarage on the new site, where there is ample room.
