CIVIC
LAST DAYS OF “SUNNY, SIDE UP” Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell are scoring one of the most sensational successes of their screen careers in “Sunny Side Up,” Fox Movietone musical comedy, now playing at the Civic Theatre. It is the first time either of the famous Fox stars has appeared in a musical comedy role, and their performance in this De Sylva, Brown and Henderson production proves their adaptability to this style of entertainment. Sharon Lynn, who made her musical debut in “Fox Movietone Follies of 1929,” has a featured role as also has Frank Richardson, who was first heard in “Fox Follies.” Marjorie White, famous Broadway comedienne, and El Brendel, famous Swedish comedian, also are winning applause by their performance in this musical comedy of the audible screen. David Butler directed “Sunny Side Up” and Seymour Felix, Broadway’s most famous dance director, staged the dances and song numbers. The remainder of the Civic’s programme is of the usual high standard of dancing and music that one always gets from the Civic. Fred Scholl earns warm applause for his organ playing, and Ted Henkel’s Civic Orchestra for the overture, "The Mikardo.” The remarkable dancing of the Continental trio, Ramon, Madeline and Pedro, is the outstanding feature of the stage entertainment, “Parisienne.” The attractions of a thousand-and-one night clubs, celebrated throughout America for their dazzling atmosphere and entertainment, are crowded into the Paradise Night Club of “Broadway,” the Universal super-talkie which comes to the Civic Theatre on Saturday, with a cast headed by Glenn Tryon, Evelyn Brent, Merna Kennedy, Thomas Jackson and Robert Ellis.
