CRYSTAL PALACE AND EMPRESS
The Trespasser,” which is now showing to enthusiastic audiences at both the Crystal Palace Theatre, Mount Eden, and the Empress Theatre. Newton, gives Gloria Swanson an opportunity to show her wonderful power as a dramatic actress. •Although it is her first talking picture, she shows that she has mastered the new technique perfectly. The picture tells the story of a struggle against conventions and against family pride. Miss Swanson piays the part of a typist who elopes with the son of one of Chicago’s wealthiest men. His social pride wounded, the father succeeds in having the marriage dissolved. The young wife is forced into a ceaseless fight for the future of her son. The pathos ana the dramatic power of the acting maintain the interest until the happy ending is finally reached. ■An excellent supporting programme of talking and singing featurettes is also shown.
