TARIFF TRUCE SCHEME
DWINDLING HOPES OF CONFERENCE “PREMATURE,” SAYS SPEAKER Reed. 10.30 a.m. GENEVA, Wed. Any hope of the Tariff Conference reaching definite conclusions virtually ended when Dr. Bollai opposed the views he previously enunciated. He expressed as his opinion that in the present circumstances, multilateral agreements, especially a truce, would be premature and impracticable. According to a previous message, the tariff truce conference was opened in a minor key. It has been renamed, ponderously, the Preliminary Conference for Concerted Economic Action. Count de Moltke, Danish Foreign Minister, said the shorter name was regarded in certain quarters as implying something revolutionary. He explained that the only objects of the conference were: (1) A customs truce. (2) A discussion of the main outlines of future negotiations.
