WAR LORD’S MOVE
LITTLE EXCITEMENT IN CHINA SPRING CAMPAIGN MOOTED SHANGHAI, Tuesday. The ultimatum of the Shansi war lord, Yen Hsi-shan, to Nanking, demanding the retirement of the President. Chlang Kai-shek, and forecasting the outbreak of hostilities in the near future, has not produced the excitement anticipated in Government circles. Chiang is taking a determined stand and refuses to abdicate while the country remains in a state of military unrest. This attitude is supported apparently by all members of the Government. The army chiefs have been instructed to assemble at Nanking, the alleged purpose being to discuss the suppression of bandits, but the real object is believed to be the planning of a spring campaign.
