SMASH IN FOG
SEVENTY INJURED IN RAILWAY COLLISION DIFFICULTIES OF RESCUE United P. A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 9 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. Seventy persons were injured when one train dashed into the rear of another in a thick fog at Rutherglen, near Glasgow. Two of the 25 patients in hospital are suffering from fractures of their skulls, and two others have both their legs broken. The majority of those in hospital are in a serious condition. Their legs were injured when the floors of the carriages collapsed. The .victims were mostly girls travelling home from work. The fog delayed the arrival of the ambulances and the frozen, slippery ground added to the difficulties of the rescuers. Those injured include a girl guide, whose legs were badly hurt. She did not whimper, though she was severely jolted when carried up the frozen embankment. A doctor attending her remarked: “You’re a fine, soldier.” She replied simply: “I’m a girl guide.”
