HARBOUR BOARD RETURNS CARGO ALSO LOWER Diu-ing the month of January, 82,720 tons of overseas cargo were handled on the Auckland wharves. This is a decrease of 1,848 tons over a similar period last year. There was an increase of 71 in the passengers arriving, the total number being 1,597, and an increase of 199 in the departures. The traffic manager reported at yesterday’s meeting of the board the following tonnage of import cargo: From New' Zealand coastal ports, 22,297 tons; Western Pacific Islands, 1,149 tons; Australia, 3,545 tons; India, 2,154 tons; Japan, 1,255 tons; Java, 108 tons; Morocco, 4,995 tons; Peru, 6,827 tons; Straits Settlements, 374 tons; London, 4,240 tons; West of England ports, 11,798 tons; Canada, 5,612 tons, and the United States, 18,336 tons. The harbourmaster’s report stated that 633 vessels with a gross tonnage of 356,243 tons arrived during the month. This was a decrease of five vessels of 15,480 gross tons over January of last year. The arrivals were:
Twenty-eight vessels arrived at Onehunga and the same number departed. There was an increase of two vessels, a. decrease of 4,524 gross tons over the figures for January last year. The Manukau Bar was workable every day of the month.
