SAILORS’ PARADISE
FRENCHMAN’S PRAISE FOR NEW ZEALAND VISIT OF TOURVILLE Sailors on the French cruiser Tourville evidently told some glowing stories about New Zealand, and the reception they received during their short stay in the Dominion. “Le Journal,” a daily paper published in Paris, contained an interview with “Brother Yves,” who made the tour on the cruiser. He was not impressed with Tahiti, and thought it was over-praised. Nothing, however, compared with New Zealand, which was considered the sailors’ paradise. People vied with each other in providing entertainment, and some of them travelled 24 hours from the backblocks to see the French cruiser.
