SPECTACULAR FIRE
BRIGADES’ HOPELESS TASK HOUSE COMPLETELY GUTTED A fire, which, in its earlier stages, proved most spectacular, broke out in a large two-storeyed homestead on the old Nolan Estate, off Nolan Road, Green Lane, at about 1.30 this morning. The house was unoccupied, the previous tenants having vacated it on Saturday. When the Parnell and Remuera Brigades arrived, the flames w-ere bursting through the w-indows, and it was not long before the w-hole building was a mass of flames. It is stated that an explosion was heard shortly before the outbreak. The firemen were confronted with an almost hopeless task, owing to the poor w-ater pressure, which necessitated the use of only two hoses. Thick shrubs and trees surrounded the house, and the firemen had great difficulty in preventing the flames from spreading to these and so endangering other houses in the vicinity. The building, which was an old wooden one, was completely gutted. The house was owned by Mrs. Burton and was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company for £1,600.
