MAJESTIC
“HARD TO GET” Now the love-complexes o£ a mannequin in one of the very-ultra New York modiste shops have been probed by the camera lens and stethoscoped by the microphone! The process has resulted in “Hard to Get,” a new First National-Vita-phone production which is now at the Majestic Theatre. Dorothy Mackaill stars in the model’s role, with a bevy of other beautiful models supporting her, and a small army of leading men. Among the latter are Charles Delaney, who finally wins the girl, Edmund Burns and Jack Oakie and one of the principal supporting roles rests in the capable hands of Louise Fazenda. The picture, incidentally, is the first independent starring vehicle for Miss Mackaill, who was so popular in various pictures with Jack Mulhall, and was cited by critics for her great performances in ‘'The Barker” and “His Captive Woman” with Milton Sills. In “Hard to Get,” she stalks millionaires in the Fifth Avenue jungles—and has a novel affair with a garage mechanic by mistake! The supporting programme of music and talkie features is also most enjoyable. Adele Rowland sings a number of fine songs, there is a “Krazy Kat” cartoon, an interesting silent film entitled “The Lion Round-Up,” and finally a musical interlude in which Mr. Haydn Murray, violinist, plays “Serenade” (Drdla), accompanied by Mr. Whiteford Waugh’s Majestic Orchestra. On Friday the Majestic will present a complete change of programme. The new attraction will be “The Very Idea,” a merry farce-comedy of matrimonial complications, starring Frank Craven. The story is a most amusing one, concerning the trials and troubles of a young couple who are given a perfect “eugenic” child by an author. Naive treatment and smart dialogue provide the laughs from beginning to end.
“The Swan.” Ferenc Molnar's play, has been filmed as an all-talking picture under the direction of a former Reinhardt player and director, Paul Stein. With Lillian Gish as star, the film’s cast also includes Rod La Rocque, Conrad Nagel, Marie Dressier, and. Albert Conti.
