DEFINING POLICY

MARRIED WOMEN AS TEACHERS RECOMMENDATION SOON The question of the employment of married women teachers is now being considered by the Education Committee, which is expected to make a recommendation on policy to the Education Department shortly. This advice was conveyed to the Auckland Education Board this morning by the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education. The Minister's reply was to a communication from the board regarding the allowing of discretionary powers by education boards in appointing married women. Advice from the department said that Mr. Atmore had approved of legislation to give education boards discretionary power. He was, however, not able to introduce the necessary amendment last session of Parliament. The chairman of the board, Mr A Burns, remarked that, a letter from the New Zealand Women Teachers’ Association said the association was m favour of the appointment of married women.
