TROUBLESOME FACTORY

DEPUTATION WAITS ON MT. EDEN COUNCIL SMOKE—NOISE—SMELL Voicing complaints against the nuisance caused by the smoke, smell and noise arising from a factory in their locality, a deputation representing pro-perty-owners in Edenvale, Sunnyside and Wynyard Roads, Mount Eden, waited on the Mount Eden Borough Council at its meeting last evening. The chief spokesman, Mr. J. Davis, in referring to the petition which was presented, pointed out that it was signed by 36 property-owners, but there were many tenants in the locality who also were suffering from the nuisance. He did not know how people could live in houses which were in a direct line with the smoke as blown by the prevailing winds. Housewives had their linen soiled by the smuts as it hung on the clothes lines. The nuisance was causing a depreciation In property values, said the speaker, and he cited the instance of a good property which had stood empty for four months, unable to sell or let. There was always a noise from th© machinery, which often worked overtime, sometimes till 10 p.m. One result of the nuisance was that property-owners would not build on good vacant sections in the locality, knowing they could do nothing with the houses when built.—The council also was losing revenue. In accordance with the petition, the deputation asked that:—(l) Proceedings be taken against the factoryowner to cause the existing nuisance to be abated: (2) no permits be granted for an extension of the factory premises. The Mayor and several councillors assured the members of the deputation that the subject would receive full consideration.
