WELCOME TO SWIMMERS
NORTH SHORE CLUB’S RECEPTION MEMBERS AT GREYMOUTH A dance at Devonport last evening was the scene of a pleasant welcome home to the North Shore Amateur Swimming Club’s representatives at the national championships at Greymouth. In welcoming the delegates, Mr. IT. Binstead, headmaster of Vauxhall School, referred to the sterling performances put up by the club’s representatives, particularly by Miss Edna Rainey, the 12-year-old girl who won the junior girls’ championship of New Zealand for 100 yards and 50 yards. The former race was swum in the record time of 80 1-ss. Miss Rainey was the recipient of two medals presented by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. Mr. Binstead also congratulated Noel Crump, second in the junior boys’ championship. and Messrs. J. Curtayne and J. Mcßae, of the water polo team, which tied with Canterbury for first place. Commenting on the performances of the swimmers, Mr. Binstead said they were all the more meritorious in view of the extreme cold of the water at Greymouth and the fact that the Shore swimmers were without the advantage of baths in which to train. He hoped all Devonport people would support any move made for the establishment of baths in the borough. Referring again to the water polo, the speaker remarked that it was the first time Auckland had been placed in national competition. Replying on behalf of the polo team, Messrs. Mcßae and Curtayne thanked Mr. Binstead for his remarks and the assembled company for the reception.
