PAPATOETOE CLUB’S SPORTS
SUCCESSFUL AFTERNOON MEETING
Although the sprint track Mas sodden, as the result of the recent I downpour, and pols of •water lay I on the distance track, the Papatoetoe \ Amateur Athletic and Cycling Ulub managed to dispose of a programme of three athletic events, on the Papatoetoe recreation ground, on Saturday afternoon. The rain hung off just sufficiently long to enable the programme to be run. A cycling handicap set down for decision Mas postponed on account of the greasy nature of the track. Good fields faced the starter, and some very keen and spirited contests M'ere witnessed. Details of the events are: 100 Yards Handicap.—C. Anderson (4£ yds), 1; R. Bennett (s£yds), 2; V. Smytheman (sc-r.), 3. Anderson got away from a flying start, and had the limit men in hand at the 30 yards peg. Bennett was on the heels of the leading man. and when 15 yards from the tape he put in a strong challenge, but failed by half a yard. One yard separated second and third. 220 Yards Handicap.—R. Bennett (10 yds), 1; A. Dawson (syds), 2; V. Smytheman (6cr.), 3. Nine runners faced the starter. Water lying on the track affected the runners. Bennett caught the limit man with 50 yards to go. and •with Dawson ran neck and neck till 15 yards from the tape, when he put in a determined sprint to gain the verdict by inches. Smytheman filled third place four yards back. Half-Mile Handicap.—J. Crum (scr.). 1: C. Anderson (3 syds), 2: R. McKenzie (syds), 3; C. Newton King (scr.), 4. There Mere nine competitors in this event and a spirited finish M ; as witnessed benveen Crum, of Lynndale, and Anderson, the former finishing strongly a yard ahead of Anderson, with McKenzie a j distance back filling third place. NEW HURDLE RECORD MELBOURNE, Sunday. At the Victorian athletic championship meeting in Xlelbourne D. AlcLardy won the 120yds hurdles championship in 15sec. which is an Australian and Victorian record. The "100yds championship was won by C. J. Lane in lOsec. The 440yds championship was M-on by A. Elliston in 50 7-10 sec. The mile championship was won by TV. XI. XVhyte in 4min 27sec.
