SMALL BOATS DAMAGED IN STIFF BLOW
AKARANA’S CUP DAY
A series of mishaps to small yachts occurred in the Akarana Yacht Club's j harbour races on Saturday. A stiff blow was coming down from j the north-east and crews sailing-the j small fry had a task to keep their | boats right side up. The 22-footer Venus carried away her backstay at the start of her race: the 14ft boat Marie broke her peak halliards: j Rahiri* broke her bowsprit; Moa split her jib; and June blew out her mainsail. In each case the boats compelled to retire. Only Kenya put in an appearance in the race for launches and the event was cancelled. All events were started off Point Resolution between the compass dolphin and the schooner-yacht Valkyrie placed at the disposal of the club by Captain E. Gilling. The officials were: —Starter, Mr. G. Miller; judge, Mr. G. Grimmer: timekeeper, Mr. T. McKnight; recorder, Mr. G. E. Lay cock; assistant recorder, Mr, W. A. Wilkinson. An “At Home” was held ashore at the clubhouse and a dance took place in the evening. The club held its annual picnic at Brown’s Island yesterday. Details of the racing are as follow: General Handicaps For Keel Yachts. (Commemoration Cup).—Gloriana was first with lona next. Scout, Pandora, Windward and Iris in that order. The start was excellent, all skippers being very good in timing the gun. Finishing times were: lona, 4.16.48; Windward. 4.22.2; Scout, 4.22.32; Iris, 4.34.54; Gloriana. 4.35.25. Result: lona, 1 ; Scout, 2; Iris, 3. General Handicap H, L and N Classes (White Cup).—The order of crossing the line was: Rakoa. Omahere. Huia. Venus, Why Not, Starlight and Doreen. Venus carried away some of her gear and fouled the compass dolphin. The boat then retired. The first five were well away, the last two being a little late. Finishing times were: Starlight, 4.26.47; Omatere, 4.34.24; Rakoa, 4.37.5; Why Not. 4.35.32; Huia. 4.42.40; Doreen, 4.52.7. Result. —Huia. 3 ; Starlight, 2; Why Not, 3. M, V and S Classes (He-o-Lin Cup). —The order of starting was as follows:—Manene, Ranui, Mawhiti, Xamu, Wild Wave, Waitoa, Dungaree, Rangatira. Secret was about 2m late. Finishing times were: Manene. 4.7.57; Mawhiti, 4.8.26; Ranui, 4.17.3 4; Xamu, 4.17.16: Wild Wave, 4.19.55; Rangitera, 4.27.55; Bungaree, 4.28.22. Result. —Manene, 3; Mawhiti, 2: Xamu, 3. T, X and Y Classes (Club Cup).— The boats got a good start as follows: Shalimar, Ramona. Lois, Cupid, Opah, Marie, Raliiri. Resolute was 10m late. Marie carried away her peal: halliards and went home. Rahiri fouled the dolphin and broke her bowsprit and had to retire. Finishing times were:—Lois, 4.12.22; Shalimar, 4.32.23; Opah, 4.15.54: Ramona, 4.19.37; Cupid and Resolute did not finish. Result.—Shalimar, 1; Lois, 2; Opah. Star Class (Brett Cup).—Moa was in best position at gunfire. Maid Marion being at heel and June not far away. Finishing times were:—Maid Marion. 4.50.29: Moa. 4.51.25; June carried away her mainsail. Result. —Moa, 1; Maid Marion, 2* The third of the series of races for a cup presented by the headquarters of the Star class in Xew York was sailed in conjunction with the event. Maid Marion won this trophy with eight points, Moa securing six points.
WAKATERE CANOE CLUB
SAILING RACES DECIDED The "Wakatere Canoe Club held a series of races during the weekend for its W class canoes. Results are as follow: Keates Championship Shield: "Waimarie, 1; Wiritoa, 2; Why Xot, 3. The judges declared the race on one lap owing to interference by a plague of flying ants. Women’s Sailing Shield: Miss W. Hunt, 1; Miss E. Hunt, 2; Miss I. Nichols and Miss P. Grayson, 3. Ten-Mile Race for Wakatere Cruising Cup: Why Not (R. Hunt and W. Macindoe), 1: Wiritoa (N. "Wing and R. Nichols), 2; Wahine (A. Williamson, H. Grut and R. Haycock), 3.
CLUBS JOIN FORCES
YACHTING ON MANUKAU Combined cruising races to Cornwallis were held by the Manukau. iacht and Motor-Boat Club and the Manukau Cruising Club on Saturday. In the yacht section Sea Toiler won tbe Yacht Club, and Xyria in the Cruising Club. In the launch division Ramona was placed first in both clubs. Detafis of the racing are as follow: Jhe yachts started at 2.30 p.m., in the following order: Sylvia, Sea Toiler’ Nvria Sea Horse, Janet, Drone, Aoma. Wild \\ ave and Miss Mac were late. After crossing, Xyria secured a long lead Rounding the Horn spinnakers were set,’ Sylvia catching Xyria, only to be passed by Aoma off Blockhouse. The iiof*theast breeze slackened somewhat, and reefs were shaken out. but the positions were not altered, the finish being timed as follows:—Aoma, 3.51.51; Sylvia, 3.52.30; Xvria, 3.53.42; Sea Horse, 3.54.32; Sea Toiler, 3.56.24; Janet, 4.1.50; Drone 4.2.19; Wild Wave, 4.11.40; Miss Mac, 4.25.44. Placings on corrected times were:— Manukau Yacht Club: Sea Toiler, 1; Xyria, 2; Janet, 3. Manukau Cruising Club: Xyria. 1; Sea Horse, 2; Sylvia, 3. Five launches started at 2.45 in the following order: Elma. Ramona. Hinemoa. Rainbow and Cremorne. The tide ebbing strongly was of great assistance and fast times were registered. Finishing times Mere:—Elma. 3.42,20; Rainbow. 3.16.30; Hinemoa. 3.43.40; Cremorne. 3.54.30: Ramona. 4.0.45. Placings on corrected times were: Manukau Yacht Club: Ramona. 1; Elma 2; Rainbow. 3. Manukau Cruising Club: Ramona, 1; Cremorne. 2; Elma. 3.
