BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
NELSON SYSTEM OPERATES IN PONSONBY APPROVED BY PARENTS A plebiscite of parents of scholars attending the Ponsonby schools taken at the end of last year revealed a two-thirds majority in favour of the introduction of the Nelson system of Bible lessons in the schools. Scripture reading and short prayers will therefore be introduced this week into the Ponsonby, Richmond Road Curran Street and Bayfield schools, which are controlled by the Ponsonby Schools Committee. The proposal emanated from a committee of ministers representing the various denominations. A half-hour lesson a week within school hours will be given to the children in the fourth, fifth and sixth standards, which will be separately addressed by different speakers The course, which will be conducted on fixed days in each of the four schools, comprises the Lord’s Prayer, the singing of hymns, a Scripture lesson from an approved syllabus and a closing prayer. Children will be exempted only at the written request of parents. The innovation will be made this afternoon at Bayfield school, which is the first of the schools to be visited. A gift of 1,000 New Testaments for use in the schools has been made by -Mr. R. A. Laidlaw.
