OLD PEOPLE’S REUNION
BIRKENHEAD FUNCTION The seating accommodation at the Methodist Church. Birkenhead, was taxed to its utmost on Saturday afternoon, when the old people of Northcote and Birkenhead districts met for their ninth annual reunion. A sh®rt service was held in the church, and an interesting address given by the Rev. F. J. Goldie, who is president of the Methodist Conference and a prominent missioner of the Solomon Islands. Two anthems were sung by the choir under Mr. J. Wright, and a solo by Gina, one of the Solomon Islands natives. The old people heartily joined in the singing of the hymns. After the service afternoon tea was served in the hall adjoining the church. The Rev. A. H. Allen presided, and musical items were given by Miss Eva Berry, Mr. P. Dellow, and Mr. W. Unzemouth on the zither, and Mr. j. Wright, violin. Mr. Allen welcomed those present and said it was a special occasion on account of it being the church’s jubilee year, which will be celebrated in May. He referred to 11 old residents who had died since the last reunion. The honours of being the oldest present, he said, went to Mrs. Smy and Mrs. Blomfield, who weri S 9. Mr. Meston was 80, and Mr. Woods 76. These were presented with bouquets and framed texts by Mrs. Goldie, after which little Nessie Martin, of Northcote, presented Mrs. Goldie with a bouquet. The old people were conveyed to and from their homes in cars, kindly lent by members of the church.
