Shamrock V
Few arrangements have given more whole-hearted satisfaction to yachtsmen in general than the decision of some of our leading yacht club.s to provide a week’s racing in the Solent for the special benefit of the new America Cup challenger, Shamrock V. (says an English writer). This fixture should prove of immense value to Sir Thomas Lipton’s new craft, for there is nothing like actual racing conditions for tuning up a yacht and
her crew. The courses sailed will be of much the same nature as those selected for the coming contest and will include races of the “windward and return” order, which have always been popular in America. This action is very typical of the spirit in which the America Cup is regarded in this country. Interest in the contest is so keen that for the last 50 years at least it has been an event of national importance. Sir Thomas Lipton’s experience oft this contest is unsurpassed, and few sportsmen have made themselves so popular both with supporters and adversaries alike.
