TRAINING YOUNG FARMERS
WORK AT MASSEY COLLEGE One of the important branches of activity at Massey College is the training of pupils in various phases of the farming industry. Over 170 students were at the college last year, said Professor Ridclet, and it is anticipated that there will be over 200 this year. A number of different courses are provided, included among these being two for young men who intend to take up the practical side of sheep or dairy farming. This course extends over one season, the classes opening at the beginning of March and closing in the third week in October, instruction being given in many matters which ordinarily could not be learned on the farm. Included in the knowledge imparted is simple farm engineering knowledge connected with grasses and soils, as well as bookkeeping. A course is provided also for men desiring to take up herdtesting, and the popularity of this course last year was shown in the fact that about SO of the 170 students at the college took the herd-testing course. Courses for instruction in factory work and also for those seeking degrees in agriculture are provided.
