Small Fields

TROTS AT WELLINGTON

Card for Tomorrow

'jpIIE Wellington Trotting Club will stage another one-day “ fixture at Hutt Park tomorrow, whep.small fields will be the order of the day. This, however, does not suggest that winners are any easier to spot. “Abaydos” appends a brief survey of the card.

Probably this fixture, coming so close on the. heels of the Wellington Cup meeting, and the fact, that the classes are much more elastic than on that occasion, has something to do with the pan- :ty of runners at llutt Park. Had it not been that some of the Wellington competitors are coming on to Otahuliu for next week’s carnival.

Hie list may have been even scantier. However, there will be sufficient material in each race to make the proceedings interesting, and backers will still have their work cut out in selecting favourites. TRIAD HANDICAP Of £175; 3.59 limit; 1 mile 5 furlongs Direct Red . . Lt Somerby ... Lt Glenrossio . . Lt Drift Wave . . ;2 Marion de Oro Lt Brent Zolock . 4S Matenga ... Lt Glenrossie and Mario de Oro are a couple of novices with possibilities on the end, but the West Coast winner, ►Somerby, should hold them safe. Drift Wave must have a chance in this field, but Brent Zolock on recent form will probably share favouritism with Somerby. NAI NAI HANDICAP Of £200; 3.52 limit; 1 mile 5 furlongs Tamahine . . Lt Writer .... 48 Boneta .... 12 Dolores .... GO Jock Bingen . 36 Lady Fa:i ... GO The distance will suit Tamahine, and if she is back to form W. Hughes’s mare will go well off the limit. Boneta is nicely placed and will be troublesome, while Jock Bingen, Writer, Dolores and Lady Pan are in winning form. Boneta and Tamahine may appeal most to the public. FEBRUARY HANDICAP Of £325; 4.35 limit; 2 miles Sonoma . . . Lt Great Logan . 24 Zella. Lt Jolly Pet ... 24 Arikitoa .... 12 Acre 4S Wrackeen ... 12 Real Light . . IS Only eight colour the card for the chief event, and the end pair, Sonoma and Zella, will make it interesting. Arikitoa should find the company to his liking, and Wrackeen may do better in a shorter race.*. On recent form at Addington, where lie ran second in fast time to Omaha, Great Logan will be most in demand, with support for Arikitoa. RAILWAY HANDICAP Of £200; 3.51 limit; 1 mile 5 furlongs Baron Bingen Lt Nelsonian ... Lt Denver City . 7-t El Direct ... 24 Glenlake . . . Lt Logan’s Pride 24 Mac Locanda . Lt Native Hero . 24 Pleasant Wave Lt Halmore ... 24 Salient . . . Lt Sandy Pointer 24 If Baron Bingen can produce his best form, he will be troublesome in this field, but Denver City,, Nelsonian and Mac Locanda have better recom-

mendations on recent racing. Logan’s Pride and Native Hero are useful and Sandy Pointer reads like one with good prospects. Public- opinion may lean toward Denver City and NelS H ARPE IT A NDICAP Of £175; 3.1 limit; 1£ miles Alexis .... Lt Hardiness . . Lt Bessie Huon . Lt Great Drift Wave . Lt Abdullah ... 24 Matenga ... Lt Lady Author . 24 Royal Iroquois Lt Petronius . . . 24 Solitude . . . Lt Glenlake ... 36 Brent Light . Lt Alexis, Brent Light, Hardiness and Royal Iroquois are front-liners that can go merrily, and if the latter hops out smartly the others .will be kept scratching all the way. Great Abdallah should bo at home in the society, while Lady Author must be reckoned with. The favourite will be Petronius, who went close to winning at Hutt Park last month, with good support for Royal Iroquois. WILFORD HANDICAP Of £225; 4.48 limit; 2 miles Miss Leda . . Lt Boneta .... 36 Quickfire ... 32 Jock Bingen . . 72 Tamahine ... 12 Writer .... S 4 Miss Leda has won before on this track, but she does not always trot solidly. Quickfire, if dressed in his best, will be troublesome, but the distance may bother Tamahine. Boneta has a fine chance, and Jock Bingen unci Writer will make the race interesting. If Boneta escapes a penalty she may be favourite over Writer. MIDDLE CLASS HANDICAP Of £225; 4.45 limit; 2 miles Denver City . Lt Native Hero . . 12 Nelsonian . . Lt Lydia .... 12 Salient .... Lt Sandy Pointer 12 El Direct .... 12 Wakefield . .. 12 Most of the competitors in this heat will be seen out earlier and Denver City or Nelsonian may earn a penalty before this event tak<§; place. The

distance will suit Native Hero, while Lydia is now showing good form. Sandy Pointer and Wakefield can go th© journey all right, but ultimate fancies may bo Sandy Pointer and Lydia. ELECTRIC HANDICAP Of £260; 2.50 limit; 1.1 miles Eugene de Oro Lt Zella 12 Logan Princess 12 Arikitoa .... 36 Sir Author ... 12 Real Light . . 36 Sonoma .... 12 Wilma Dillon 36 Wrackeen ... 12 The final event contains some that can go pretty quick, and off the front Eugene de Oro is one to be considered. Logan Princess, Sonoma, Wrackeen, Sir Author and Zella are a useful quintet on the next mark, while further back Arikitoa will appeal more than his companions. Wrackeen and Sir Author will have most friends, but if the latter declines the bout Logan Princess will be in demand.
