Rotorua Card
Review of the Fields
FINE PROGRAMME TOMORROW
SIR RUSSELL, very unlucky in both bis races at the recent Takapuna meeting, will have liis chance tomorrow in the Rotorua Cup, in which he will be given a chance to stall off two other good ones in Hakanoa and Mithra at the end of the mile and a-quarter journey.
There is every indication that all roads will lead to the thermal regions, today and tomorrow, and again on Monday, for the annual race meeting of the Rotorua Racing Club, which opens tomorrow and will be concluded on Monday. The prospects for a successful fixture are particularly bright, and with fine weather and the track in its present good condition, together with splendid fields, the best of sport should be witnessed. “Early Bird’s” review of the first day’s card is appended. The opening event tomorrow is the Pohutu High-Weight Wako King, the top weight, has not shown his best form for some time. Kairuri has an unbeaten record to date—one start for one win—and is a good sort. Page Boy and Oscar can both improve on Matamata showings, and if Diamond Queen can see the mile out she will be dangerous. Spring Abbey is fancied most of all, for he is in tiptop fettle. Mashoor lias been consistent in this type of race, and Always is on the Lip-grade. Best backed may be: SPRING ABBEY PAGE BOY MASHOOR. Waimangu Stakes There are a good deal of unknown quantities in this event. Hinauta, Loving Cup, Rangikaha, Bold Archer, lluapatu, Little Toy, Rose Willonyx, Lusoma and Miss Albyn have all shown pace at one time or another, but the fancies may be: BOLD ARCHER LOVING CUP ROSE WILLONYX. Mokoia Handicap This is the first of three open races on the first day’s card, and the position is rather complicated by the fact that exactly half the field claim later engagements. Maori has a big weight for a small horse,'’but he is as game as they are made. Hakanoa’s mission is understood to be the Cup, but he would be extremly hard to beat here. * Ti Tree is in good form, and so is Good Boy, whose Thames efforts were impressive. Mosaic, Billikins and Abbess may be the best of the others. The range of betting may favour:—» TI TREE GOOD BOY MAORI BOY Rotorua Cup Heading the Cup list is Sir Russell. He has shown fine form up to a mile, and it remains to be seen if he can go two furlongs farther. He certainly finished fourth, only a length away, in Royal Doulton’s nine furlongs race at Takapuna recently—and he was unlucky then —but the good straight tomorrow will try him out. Hakanoa is in good form, and he will appreciate the drop in weight today. He is one that might easily upset the favourite. Awarere is preferred in the sprint, but it must not be forgotten that he has a second in an A.R.C. Handicap, one mile, to his credit. Mithra won convincingly at Takapuna over seven furlongs, and tli'ere is no reason why she should not be equally at home for ten furlongs. She too, is a real danger. The Lover will be an absentee, and Good Boy is preferred in the preceding event. Pompeius is a good stayer, and may be better than his stablemate Wenday. Glena Bay’s form the second day at Takapuna can be overlooked, and he cannot be ruled out. Respirator has been racing consistently, and like Mithra, if the track is wet he will have little chance. Although the field promises to fine down a bit, there should be about eight runners, ensuring a fine contest. The totalisator favourites may be: SIR RUSSELL HAKANOA MITHRA Hot Springs Handicap They are not a really good lot in this race, although there is speed about Sir Mond, Loving Cup, Glenison, On Top, Terrapeen, Welcome Boy, Ruby Dawn, Wild Mint, Caulis and Rose Willonyx. On Top has a chance to make amends for Takapuna disappointments, if he does not go off the course at this tricky home turn. The favourites may be: ON TOP GLENSON WELCOME BOY

Geyser Hack Handicap The top-weight. Unoco, has a steadier but it is a 7.7 minimum, and he ran a first and second in three starts at Matamata last week. Parfait Amour is a doubtful runner, and Page Boy is preferred in the High-weight. Brampton will go well on a hard track, and then there are the other penalised Matamata winners, Red Day and Coll. Crown Arch, Snow Prince (who won so easily in the mud at Thames), and Measurer all have chances. Bestbacked will probably be: COLL RED DAY' BRAMPTON Arawa Park Stakes Quite a big field paid up for the two-year-old heat, although a number of defections is likely, and these include Bells of Shandon. while Set Fair is also a probable course scratching. King Ford, Sub Editor, Leasehold, King Win. Full Measure, Grand Spirit and Caviare have perhaps the best credentials, but in a, race where there are so many unknown quantities there is a. royal chance of a turn-up. There should be good money for: FULL MEASURE GRAND! SPIRIT CAVIARE Tourist Handicap It was at Rotorua twelve months ago, in this same race, that Branson scored a surprise victory and then went on to put up something of a record in sprints round the country circuits. I-Ie ran a fine race at Thames after a lengthy spell, and this a month ago suggests that he is about due for another trot. Awarere is a hard horse to follow these days. Vali may be an absentee, but even if overweighted he would take some heading off, for he is good. British King is in great order, and as he looks like being better than ever he may be a nuisance to our sprinters this term. Wako King is not fancied in this company, and Macroom is not improving. Glenstar will go fast, and Cruaclian is a likely recruit from the hack ranks. Valstreet, White Ringlet and Abbess are speedy hacks, and the latter pair are faster than the average. .However, they should be held safe by those near the top. In a good pool there should be plenty of support forthcoming for: BRITISH KING BRANSON AWARERE The following are some of tomorrow’s
Riding Engagements E. Ludlow. Lusoma, Diamond Queen and King Win. A, Parsons. —Tambourine, Grand Spirit, Brampton and Respirator. L. Du lieu. —Mashoor. J. Day. THE CUP FIELD I Ten candidates figure in the Rotorua Cup, but with The Lover to be counted out, and others doubtful, there is ja possibility of seven or eight going to the post. The following is a list pf horses with their riders in the ROTORUA CUP HANDICAP Of £320; li miles Sir Russell K. Gill Hakanoa A. Tinker * Awarere . .. . . J.
