How In The Shade Won Wanganui Cup
Cimabue’s Attractive Sprint Effort
fX the A\ anganui Cup yesterday In the Shade won fairly I easily from the Ellerslie representative, Corinax, and Ihe Hawk. The winner’s form was impressive, for lie had the race in his keeping a long way from home. Cimabue registered a most attractive performance in the sprint.
WANGANUI, Thursday. Splendid weather prevailed today for the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting, there being a good attendance and splendid racing. The track was in great order. The totalisator handled £25.944 10s, compared with £25,812 last year, an increase of £132. A feature of the day was the performance put up by Hector Gray, who rode four winners and one second in seven mounts, finishing in fourth berth on the other two occasions. In the Shade won the Wanganui Cup convincingly at the finish, while Corinax did all that was asked of him to finish second. The Hawk was the unlucky runner, htuogli he could scarcely have beaten the winner, who showed an ekpected improvement on his recent displays. He is trained at Takanini for his Rangitikei owner. Silvermine’s defeat in the sprint was as costly as Cimabue’s victory was unexpected. Maiden Race Leisure was at a short price for the opening event, the Maiden Race, being entrusted with £827. while there was good support for Potoaform £350. Leisure was first to move out. followed by Potoaform and Valma. When they had gone a furlong Potoaform and Leisure were together in the lead, attended by Miss Cobham, Coalbag, Pont D’Or, Valma and Myola. Across the top the order was Potoaform and Leisure, well ahead of Miss Cobham, Coalbag and Valma. There was practically no change round the turn and into the straight. Once the judge was sighted Potoaform and Leisure came on and were not troubled to hold off Miss Cobham, Potoaform beating the favourite by three-quarters of a length, with Miss Cobham a length and a-half away. Valma was four lengths back, just ahead of Rewatoa, Myola, Coalbag and Callan. Stewards’ Handicap For the Stewards’ Handicap Ruanui £7OO was solidly backed, while Keddar £509 and Otairi £471 were preferred to Count Palatine £332. Habit was slow to get away. Keddar, Otairi. Consent. Joy Bird, Ruanui and Paitonu showed the way out of the straight, but Habit moved up very last running for the six furlongs, where she was up with Otairi and Consent, the trio being followed by Ruanui, Keddar, Joy Bird, Paitonu, Fine Acre and Count Palatine. At the threefurlong post Otairi and Consent were clear of Keddar and Habit, with Ruanui, Paitonu and Count Palatine following. Ruanui came round the field on the turn and was up with Otairi and Consent when they straightened up for the run home, while Count Palatine and Keddar were moving up fast. At the distance Otairi was holding Ruanui, and Count Palatine flung out a challenge, but in an interesting finish Otairi held his advantage to win by a length and a-half, with Ruanui half a length behind Count Palatine. Paitonu was fourth and Consent, Habit, Joy Bird and Keddar followed in that order. Westmere Hurdles
For the Westmere Hurdles Red Fuchsia £674 was a firm favourite, with Democratic £484 and Beaumont £4lO better backed than Borsalene £352. Beaumont, Borsalene, Red Fuchsia, Democratic and Panorama was the order over the first fence. Beaumont and Borsalene led up the straight from Panorama, Democratic, Red Fuchsia and Joke Form. Runnihg to the back stretch Beaumont put a break on the field, his nearest attendants being Joke Form, Borsalene and Democratic, with a gap back to Red Fuchsia, Beaumont, Borsalene and Joke Form. Democratic showed the way to Red Fuchsia across the top and Joke Form dropped out of the picture on the turn, Beaumont, Borsalene and Democratic being in line over the last hurdle, with Red Fuchsia right up with them. Democratic did best in the run home to win by a length and a-quar-ter, Red Fuchsia just beating Borsalene a head for second place. Beaumont was a head away, followed by Panorama. Juvenile Handicap Even betting marked the Juvenile Handicap, Jenny Diver £793 and Equitant £741 being better backed than Treasury £491, while Autopay £320 was at a good price, and Rose Lupin £145 was at a better figure. They were all in line when the tapes went up, but several were slow to move. Pass On. Treasury, Arisus, Rose Lupin, and Autopay were showing the way out at the beginning, thes-e being in the lead. Across the top Autopay went to the front, followed by Pass On, Arisus. Isa, Rose Lupin, and Treasury. Autopay turned for home ahead of Isa, Rose Lupin, Arisus, Equitant, Treasury, and Belle Star. Rose Lupin was the only one to get close to Autopay over the final stages, failing by a neck to catch the leader. Arisus was a length and a-half away, followed by Equitant, Treasury, and Belle Star, with a gap back to Belle Star and Jenny Diver. Wanganui Cup As expected, In The Shade, £916, and Corinax, £743, monopolised the attention of investors when the Wanganui Cup contestants paraded, Yoma, £450, and The Hawk, £403, being also fancied. From a good start Corinax, The Hawk. Taneriri, Cashier, Bright Glow, and In The Shade were first to become prominent. When they had settled clown for the long journey, Corinax, Taneriri, Seatown. The Hawk, Cashier. Bright Glow. Shrewd, Yoma, Kilorell, and In The Shade were racing in that order. On the turn into the straight the first time Corinax, Shrewd, Seatown, Taneriri, The Hawk, Bright Glow, Cashier, Yoma, In The Shade, and Kilorell were in fairly close array, this being practically unaltered past the stands. Running to the six furlongs Shrewd *'nd Corinax had Seatown just beside them, with The Hawk, Yoma, and In The Shade next. A furlong farther on In The Shade had taken the lead, being followed down the back by Shrewd. Seatown, Yoma, Corinax, Bright Glow, and Taneriri. In The Shade piloted Yoma, Seatown, Corinax, Cashier, The Hawk and Bright Glow across the top and into the home stretch, where Yoma Corinax, and The Hawk were the favourite’s nearest attendants. Holding his own in the run home, In The Shade scored comfortably by a length from Corinax, who was a neck in Jront of # The Hawk, with Yoma. Shrewd, and Seatown in a bunch behind the place-getters. Bright Glow and Taneriri were next, with a gap back to Cashier and Kilorell. Victory Hack
There was some good betting on the \ ictary Hack. Goldlike, £571, Dolomite, £484, and Thrift, £474. were preferred to The Warden, £444, and
Latakia, £353. Warfille was slow to leave when the barrier lifted. Latakia, Joy Spear, Dolomite, My Own, Auctioneer, The Warden, and*Warfille showed the way out of the straight. Warfille was up with Latakia at the six furlongs, with The Warden, Dolomite, and Joy Spear in a bunch, Auctioneer and Thrift following. There was little change across the top, Latakia and Warfille turning Tor home ahead of The Warden, My Own. Dolomite, Joyspear, Thrift, and Goldlike. Once straightened up for the run home, however, Dolomite put in a claim, and came on to win nicely by half a length from Latakia, who was a length and a-quarter ip front of Joyspear. My Own was fourth, and The Warden. Warfille, Auctioneer, and Goldlike next to finish. Petre Hack The Petre Hack Handicap saw the downfall of one of the hottest favourites of the day, Cadland, £i,H2, who was better backed than Zarene, £759. and Joy Germ, £527. Limosin, £284, carried less than Tenacre, £371. Wild Country, Abbey Queen, and Paiko got away badly, Evening Hero, Limosin, Perennis, Green Acre, Joy Germ, Tenacre, and Zarene being the order down the back stretch, while running for the three furlongs Limosin, Perennis, Joy Germ, Evening Hero, Tenacre, Green Acre, Zarene, and Cadland were racing in that order. Limosin was clear of Tenacre on the turn into the straight, •Toy Germ, Perennis, Cadland and Evening Hero following. Once in line f»X‘ the judge, Cadland made an effort to catch the leaders, but Limosin won with ease by a length and a-quarter, Tenacre being two lengths ahead of Cadland. Green Acre was fourth, and Perennis, Zarene, Paiko, and Evening Hero followed them home. Silvermine, £1,114, was a hot order for the Flying Handicap, Ridgemount £914, and Moa Bird, £629, being preferred to Cimabue, £496, while there was a drop of a hundred to Arikinui. Ridgemount, Silvermine, Arikinui, Cimabue, Freehold, and Malayan showed the way down the back to the tour furlongs, where Arikinui was in the lead, followed by Ridgemount, Silvermine, Cimabue, Freehold, and Malayan. Arikinui and Silvermine led across the top, with Ridgemount, Cimabue, and Freehold in close attendance. Cimabue was closest to the two leaders round the turn for home. In line for
the judge, Silvermine, who had run wide, was overhauled by Cimabue, who then went after Arikinui, and, catching him at the distance, came on to win convincingly by a length and a-quarter, with Arikinui just half a head in front of Silvermine. Ridgemount was fourth, and Moa Bird, and Freehold next to finish. Results are: Maiden Race, of £175; 6 furlongs.—2 Potoaform, S.O, If. Gray, l; i Leisure, 5.2, B. H. PROSPECTS FOR TOMORROW In all but the classic, the Jackson Stakes, and the Hurdles, there will be good fields competing at Wanganui again tomorrow. The following will be well supported tomorrow: Autumn Handicap.— Awaken, Treasury and Equitant. Harrison Handicap.— Otairi, Ruanui and Paitonu. ’ Jackson Stakes. — Paganelli, Cimabue and Tenterden. Fordell Hurdles. — Elicit, Democratic and Aurora Borealis. Okoia Hack Handicap.— Warfille. My Own and The Warden. Earle Stakes. — Corinax, In the Shade; and Taneriri. Matarawa Hack.— Cadland. Zarene and Joy Germ. Farewell Handicap.— Moa Bird, Fernden and Ridgemount. The acceptances are as follow:
HAKANOA’S MISSION THE ROTORUA CUP Hakanoa will make his next appearance over a middle journey at Rotorua, writes the Sun’s Huntly correspondent. Trainer B. Patterson railed the gelding to Rotorua on Wednesday and he will start in the Cup on Saturday. Hakanoa had a short let-up after his Northern trip and he is not cherryripe yet. A. Tinker will ride him. as Goldfinch, his usual pilot, will be at Wanganui. Probably the shorter journey on the second day may suit Hakanoa better. Abess also made the trip to Rotorua on Wednesday. She is well up in . the hack weights now, and on her present handicaps in open events will still need to be at her best to win, though she is in good nick at present. She is in two races the first day and will probably start twice. So far no rider has been engaged for her.
