BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL
The Birkenhead Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening. the Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail, presiding. Permission was granted for the Birkenhead and Northcote Regatta Committee to hold side-shows in Ilinemoa Park on Saturday, February 22, and a donation of £2 2s was made to the regatta fund. For the convenience of those electors who work in the City it was decided to have a polling booth in the City for the by-election on Tuesday next. A petition signed by the ratepayers in Queen Street, asking the council to take over dedication of the street, was not entertained owing to the cost involved in forming; a road. Cr. G. B. Hewson, the senior councillor, was elected Deputy-Mayor in place of Mr. L. R. L. Moller, who has resigned from the council. When a letter was received from the bank advising that the rate of interest on overdrafts had been to 7 per cent., the town clerk said the borough had no overdraft at present.
