DRUNKEN CUSTOMER FINED
A suggestion that the City Council should review the licence of the Rendezvous Cafe in Upper Queen Street was made by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, when John Maguire appeared on a charge of assault, which, it was alleged, had been committed ori the premises of the cafe. The charge was dismissed, but Maguire was fined £l, in defaut three days’ imprisonment for being disorderly while drunk. Maguire, a fireman, aged 34, was charged with being disorderly while drunk in Queen Street and assaulting Eunice Cooper. He admitted the drunkenness, but denied the assault. "This assault took place in the Rendezvous Cafe,” said Senior-Ser-geant O’Grady. "The cafe is a resort of all sorts of characters.” The Magistrate: Yes, it’s a bit of a nuisance, that place. Eunice Cooper said that she had been talking to Maguire about 10.30 She had refused to dance with him, so he had grabbed her by the wrist and pushed her against the wall. "He did not hurt me,” she added. Accused attempted to put a question to the witness, but the magistrate stopped him. “She has done you no harm and if you question hpr you will only put your foot in it,” he said. liinemoa Dorothy Weller declared that she saw no assault. Maguire, who was under the influence of liquor, had merely caught Miss Cooper by the wrist. The assault charge was dismissed and Maguire was fined on the other count. ”If you come up here again for drunkenness you will get seven days,” added the magistrate. Accused: You needn’t worry about that. sir. I am going back to Australia next week. “And a good thing, too,” agreed Mr. Hunt. Speaking of the cafe, Mr. Hunt said: "I have suggested before that the City Council should review the licence of his place.” Chief-Detective Hammond: It would be a godsend if they did. it's badly wanted,. .... , j
