TALLYMEN’S AWARD
INTERPRETATION OF CLAUSE
A breach of award is committed by a tallyman who tallies coal from two hatches at one time, according to an interpretation of the Auckland Tally-1 men s award, given by the Arbitration Court today. The question was raised by the discharge of coal from the hulk Kakapo, which has only one hold on the after Part, but which is served by two hatches.
The judge points out that the employers were of opinion that the special meaning of the word “hold” and the eoijtext required it to be applied to the word hatch m the Waterside Workers award. A hatch and hatchway was properly the entrance to the hold, and not the hold itself. A tallyman tmf ° nea at the hatchway, not in the hold, which indicated that the word hatch ’ was to be used in its proper sense.
