CHICAGO ON THE DOLE

FOOD AND CLOTHING FOR CITY EMPLOYEES

BANKRUPT MUNICIPALITY CHICAGO, Tuesday. i ■ While bread, milk and clothing doles are being distributed among municipal employees in Chicago the deadlock between the Mayor, Mr. William Thompson, and the Citizens’ Relief Committee has been finally ended. The Mayor has consented to permit his subordinates to consult with the committee about relief measures. The condition of the employees ijad reached a desperate stage. The chairman of the Cook County Board, Mr. Cermalc, had opened charity stores in Polk Street to thousands of workers who were faced with starvation because they could not collect their long overdue wages. These supplies were literally taken out of the mouths and off the backs of the poor of the county for they were being ncld for those who are ordinarily in distress at this time of the year. Food, shoes, clothing coal and milk were given to men and women, -who presented orders signed By their departmental heads. Each allotment was limited to £5 on the first call of the applicants.
