TAUMARUNUI NEWS
A yoLing resident of Taumarunui, Mr. lan Johnston, a son of Mr, and Mrs. A. Johnston, left this week en route to England, where he is to enter the Royal Air Force. Mr. Johnston is the first nominee from the town to take up Hying as a career, and his future will be watched with great interest. A farewell evening was held in the Parish Hall, when Mr. C. D. Crawshaw made Mr. Johnston a presentation and expressed the regret lelt at his departure. - Mr. J. A. Arthur presided over a general meeting of the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce, in the absence of the president. Mr. A. S. Laird. In reply to a request from the chamber, advice was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, New Plymouth, to the effect that the Tangarakau Gorge had been wholly reserved as a scenic reserve, with the exception of a small portion at present under action and another small portion which was private property. The Taranaki Chamber advised that its touring party would include Mr. Raish, H.M. Trade Commissioner, and would consist of 14 persons all told. The secretary, Mr. R. H. Caitcheon, introduced the executive committee’s views on an extension of the Taumarunui postal exchange system. The postmaster, Mr. A. B. Card, explained the position, and pointed out that it was a policy question with the department to retain small exchanges. With regard to complaints from Owhango and Kukahi, he suggested that an improvement: might be effected if these two exchanges were amalgamated. The question was left in the secretary’s hands. At the monthly meeting of the Taumarunui District High Schol Committee. the chairman. Mr. A. T. Driffil, introduced the question of establishing a junior high school in the town, and expressed the opiniion that a move should be made in this direction: The headmaster, Mr. J. H. Lynskey, and the committee unanimously treated the suggestion with favour, in view of the advantage it would be to the educating of children in the district. The subject is to be fully investigated.
