HOW ELECTRICITY AFFECTS FURNISHINGS

We talk-.of the searchlight of truth, It shows up the dark patches in life, clears up confusion of thought, and establishes a balance from which higher things emanate. Electricity has acted as 4 searchlight in our houses. Before its day we had the Victorian sitting-room packed like a curiosity shop. This was only possible because the insuflicient lighting concealed a proportion of the room’s assets (or liabilities, according to the point of view). The moment everything showed, tile nightmare had to be simplified. Now that our rooms are, if anything, more brilliantly lighted by night than by day, everything has to have- a reason for its existence, either as a thing of use or of beauty.

Lighting itself has now become the centre round which the room-revolves, and whether it is done by diffusion or concentration, art designers each have their special methods of interpreting light in terms of fittings. You cannot have light without some sort of container; therefore, the container without interfering with the light, may as well be attractive as possible.

CASEMENT WINDOWS

In its picturesque appearance lies th€s principal feature of the casement type of window. A range of casement windows, either plain or filled with diamond panes, more nearly fits the ideal home, visioned by every householder, than any other style. Beside the picturesque advantage of the case-

ment window, there are practical ones as well. There are no pulleys to come stiff, no ropes to break, or chains to tangle. As the sides of the window are held in place securely, rattling is eliminated, however strong the wind. When the easement window is opened ventilation is secured over its entire height; by simple level adjustment any desired degree of ventilation may be secured. Control over opening and closing mechanism is located at just one' place and no hard pushing or pulling is necessary. Casement windows are divided into two types: the variety opening in and the one opening out. Some advantages lie with -each sort, and it Is for the. home-owner to decide which makes the most appeal to him.
