WOMAN ASSAULTED
CALLER DURING HUSBAND’S ABSENCE
GAOL FOR MAN WITH LIST ■From Our Oven Correspondent . DARGAVILLE, Tuesday. In the Dargaville Police Court today Archibald Joseph Chester, alias James Phillip Hooper, 24, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for assault. The offence was committed against a married woman at Donnelly’s Crossing on Sunday evening. A list of previous convictions against accused was handed by the police to Messrs. F. A. Jones and T. C. French, J.P.’s, who were on the Bench. A charge of indecent assault, arising out of the same set of circumstances, was dismissed. In evidence, complainant stated that accused had come to her house at Donnelly’s Crossing at about 8.30 on Sunday evening while her husband was absent at Kaihu. He had come inside to wait for her husband, whom he desired to see, and while there had committed the offence. Witness was able to get away from accused and leave the house, and wait outside till her husband returned. The woman’s husband also gave evidence. Constable Wakelin stated that when interviewed last night accused had made a complete denial of the offence.
