Corinax and the Wanganui Cup

After the great run enjoyed by Auckland horses at New Plymouth j last Saturday, Northern sports- • men will be looking forward to mere of these good things at Wanganui tomorrow and on Saturday. The principal race at the River City tomorrow is the time-honoured V anganui Cup. The Auckland province is represented by two muchfancied candidates in Corinax and In the Shade, while Taneriri, another Northerner, has only got to stay the mile and three-quarters to be a. danger. There would seem to be every encouragement to expect Corinax to be a very live possibility over this journey, and In the Shade is said to be nearing his best once more; there is no reason to doubt his stamina. Although Aucklanders have three horses in the Cup, the Northern province is not represented in the sprint. Others engaged during the day are Royal Visitor (Maiden Race). Hard Words. Rose Lupin and Treasury (Juvenile Handicap), Abbey Queen, Joy Germ, Perennis and Wild Country (Petre Hack) —quite a formidable lot in their respective classes. Latest advices from Wanganui indicate that the sandy course will he in the best of order. A start tomorrow is to be made with the Maiden Race | Treasury was accepted for prior to winning at New Plymouth last Saturday, and his success automatically makes him ineligible. He is engaged | later in the day. Not many of those I left in have shown form sufficient to [SO nap on, perhaps the best being : Valma, Pont D’Or, Potoaform, Myola, I Cyrille, Royal Visitor and Leisure. | From these the best backed division j will no .oubt be selected, and they | may be LEISURE ROYAL VISITOR CYRILLE Stewards’ Handicap Ten is quite enough for this event, which is started half-way up the straight, providing little more than half a furlong straight to the sharp bend. Ruanui is very fast and a hard puller, and Otairi, too, is a free goer, so both should be suited here. Consent. like Ruanui. is now trained by L. G. Morris, and the former should see out the journey strongly. Pai~ tonu will be racing over his best distance. and Keddar has only to see it out to be a real danger, for he is on the improve as a result of his recent outings at Trentham. A good three-year-old should be very much at home in this event, but is Count Palatine really good? In the spring he showed considerable promise, and then he disappointed at Ellerslie. However, the Pala.din gelding will find the Wanganui track to his liking, for he was trained there early in the spring. Hipo did not show up at Takapuna, and Joy Bird, too, has been out of form a long time. Pine Acre is back again from hurdling to flat racing, and he has the necessary pace. Habit is a recent recruit from the hack class and may show up. However, most money may be forthcoming for OTAIRI COUNT PALATINE RUANUI Westmere Hurdles R.ed Fuchsia has a stiff weight to carry, and yet he is a class above this field. Hence the reason why he has to concede from 2Slb to 471 b to the opposition. Vivo is not reliable, and Democratic is; at the weights the latter has a chance to down the number one horse. Panorama will go well if in the mood, but Beaumont and Borsalene are possibilities. Joke Form has yet to show anything like winning form over the battens, and First Ruler is to make his debut as a jumper. A favoured trio will probably be DEMOCRATIC RED FUCHSIA BEAUMONT Juvenile Handicap This is a big field, and with the barrier placed so as to provide less than a furlong run to the big top bend half the field will have their chances extinguished from the jump-off. Hard Words is likely to be an absentee, and the stable will have Treasury to rely upon. He goes fast and this track should suit him. Another particularly speedy filly is Equitant. and if she gets clear will take a lot of catching. Blue Paper. Belle Star. Jenny Diver, Royal Finance. Rose Lupin. Isa and Arisus are possibilities, but the market should point to TREASURY EQUITANT JENNY DIVER | THE AC Cl

Chance for Auckland Stayers

L Wanganui Cup I With thirteen likely runners the ; field is bigger than usual, and there ; should be a stirring - contest tor the | handsome trophy. Bright Glow is reported to have failed badly in the Tarai naki Cup. and the journey here is farther. However, she is very well. Corinax is at his best, and as he is a fine stayer he should go verv close to winning. Seatown won the Manawatu Cup, this being the farthest he lias won over, and although he is a good sort he has not shaped like a stayer. Cashier is in similar case, brilliant, if not possessed of stamina. His last appearance, subsequent to being narrowly beaten by Seatown in the Manawatu Cup, was a puzzling failure in the Marton Cup. In the Shade is returning to form, and he was accounted very unlucky in the Taranaki Cup. There are not wanting indications that the Takanini representative may be the favourite on the day. The Hawk won the Taranaki Cup handsomely, but will he be able to stay on for 14 furlongs with the pace on? Piuthair is a possibility, and Yoraa manages to retain his form remarkably well; he was only touched off 12 months ago by Rapine in this race. Orazone and Taneriri have yet to stay the distance. The latter, however, spreadeagled his weak field over the concluding stages of the Thames Cup, one mile and aquarter, so that there is hope for him. Uilorell and Mister Gamp have stayers* chances, and Shrewd likes this track. On his recent showings the Wanganui course will suit him, and if there is to be a surprise from among the lightweights Shrewd might be responsible. It is quite a good field, and in a good pool there should be plenty of backing for C ORIX AX IN THE SHADE SHREWD Victory Hack Handicap This is not a particularly strong field, those that make, most appeal being Dolomite, Thrift, Warfille, My Own, The Warden. Goldlike, Latakia and Auctioneer. It is an open race, but there should be most money for THRIFT MY OWN THE WARDEN Patre Hack Handicap There is the usual big field in this hack sprint, which usually lias a big dividend associated with it. Tenacre, Cadland, Joy Germ, Zarene, Limosin, Abbey Queen, Green Acre. Pa.iko, Perennis and Wild Country are all good and promising hacks. Best backed may be CADLAND ZARENE JOY GERM Flying Handicap A nice field of eight will make for a true-run event, for on this track there is usually some interference in these short races. Cimabue, h,eading the list, has a stiff weight, and it will be some surprise if he can win with this impost. Silvermine from all accounts was very unlucky at Taranaki the first day, but with Paganelli out of the way it looks as if his turn has come. In fact he looks next door to what in turf parlance is a “racecourse certainty”— if there is any such thing. Benzora may want another race, but he is good when caught right. The sprint the second day should see him dangerous. Ridgemount goes well for six furlongs and he will be able to round the bend on two legs. Freehold is a speedy fellow, and now that he is more solid is going to be a useful sprinter. Moa Bird finishes strongly, and Arikinui and Malayan complete quite a nice field. In a good betting race favouritism should rest with SILVERMINE FREEHOLD MOA BIRD Mister Gamp is reported to be an unlikely runner in the Wanganui Cup. There are no bracketed horses according to the correct card for tomorrow. The following are a few of tomorrow's Riding Engagements H. Gray. —ln The Shade, Ridgemount, Otairi, Potoaform, Equitant, and Tenacre; also Paganelli in the Jackson Stakes on Saturday. H. Goldfinch. —Jenny Diver. H. Wiggins. —Cashier. Keddar, Perennis, Rose Lupin, Goldlike, Moa Bird, Valma. and Tenterden (Jackson Stakes). T. Webster. —Count Palatine, Shrewd and Pass On. W. H. Jones. —Auctioneer, Evening Hero. Rewatoa. and Arisus. L. Voitre —Joybird, Tres Chic, Soviet and Malayan. —Paitonu and Orazone. R, McTavish.— Corinax and Bon Eve. i A. McDonald.— Red Fuchsia. | R. J. Mackie. —Green Acre l W Broughton. —-Kilorell.
