BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The Birkenhead School Committee held its monthly meeting last evening, the chairman. Mr. J. Macdonald, presiding The headmaster.- Mr. A. G. Menzies, reported that three probationers have been attachecL to the school for training. Miss Anderson had been granted sick leave for a month and Miss Miller ■was temporarily filling the position. The school roll, after deducting the 51 scholars transferred to the Junior High School, numbered 827. A cheque for £llO hacl been sent to the Lircetor of Dental Hygiene as the district’s quota for the establishment of a dental clinic. Mr. U. \V. Dunlop, secretary of the Auckland Education Board, advised that the Health Department had allocated a dental nurse to the Birkenhead clinic, to take up duties toward the end of March. He also intimated that the board was unable to continue to pay half the cost of the sanitary services. The board had. however, authorised a special grant of £5 in aid of the school fund. The committee decided to send . letter of protest to the board on this question. Mr. T. A. Hunter, Director of the Division of Dental Hygiene, wrote agreeing to recommend the erection of an *A” type clinic. He added that he could give no guarantee as to when a second nurse would be appointed. The proposed structure for the Dental Clinic to be built in the school grounds will be of wood, and as the school is a brick rough-cast building, the committee decided to ask the Education Board what would be the difference in price to have the clinic built of permanent materials in keeping with the school buildings.
