HAURAKI PLAINS NOTES
Considering the weather of the past few' months, good progress has been made by the Lands Drainage Department with the metalling of the Pate tonga district roads, but in view o: the shortness of the length so far com pleted, it appears very unlikely that the only gap in the Hauraki Plains - Morrinsville road will be abolished this summer. The metalling has completed from the* Piako County boundary to Whiteman’s corner, and last vreek t commencement was made at the Mangawhare Road junction, the intention being to work back to connect at Whiteman’s. This indicates that it is not intended to proceed this summer to Kaihere, though the formation work is being pushed on. and in a few' weeks will be completed. The road is being built to highway standard. which necessitates much widening, filling and regrading. A great deal has been said and written concerning the menace of the spread of ragwort on Hauraki Plain-, but little has been done, and at various parts of the district clumps have appeared in bloom. A possible explanation as to why the pest is net dealt with in its incipient stages was given recently. Strange as it may seem, it was none other than that, the dreaded weed was not recognised. Small attendances of farmers marked the visit of the provincial organiser rwf the New* Zealand Farmers’ Union to the various centres on Hauraki Plains to explain the proposed sub-provin-cial council scheme. At some centres, delegates to the council were appointed. and at others the question was deferred to a more representative meeting.
