ONEHUNGA DRAINAGE
WORK ON BIG CONTRACT The question of expert supervision of the drainage contract in the new area was the subject of a report by the Mayor and town clerk to the Onehunga Council. They stated that Mr. Greville Walker. C.E., was prepared to undertake the supervision at a remuneration of 2& per cent, of the contract price, but that the council would be required to pay the wages of all clerks of works. The foreman of works, Mr. R. Gordon. reported that it would be more economical to employ the existing staff, with the addition of a chairman, and that the services of the sanitary inspector, Mr. H. Wilkinson, should be utilised for testing purposes. The latter .recommendation was adopted. The Australian Mutual Provident Society wrote agreeing to a reduction in its loan to the council for drainage, and water mains in the new area. The original negotiations provided for an advance of £36.000, but as the tenders disclosed that the scheme could bo carired out for £28,000. the loan has been .reduced accordingly. A special rate of 4jSd in the £, with a currency of 33 years, is to be struck as security. Two letters were received from the Merrilands Ratepayers’ Association. The first one expressed gratification at the able and efficient manner m which the council had handled the raising of the loan fo.r drainage and water reticulation, and the second communication directed the concil’s attention to potholes, grass, and weeds on the streets and foothpaths; straying cattle; and the necessity for a general cleaning up of fire plugs and water tables. The use of Jellicoe Park was granted to the Onehunga Mothers’ keag'ue for its annal reunion on February 20. Complaints having been received of lar.rikinism in Jellicoe Park, the council decided to report the matter to the sergeant of police.
It was decided to accept an offer of £3OO for a steam road roller, and to expend £7O on the conversion of a motor-truck into a road grader.
