Regret that he would be unable to see his term of office to its conclusion was expressed by Mr. Frank House, president of the Hamilton Rotary Club, at the weekly luncheon yesterday. He said he would be leaving for a trip to England on March 7. Referring briefly to the Avork of the club in the past year, Air. House said something had been done to establish a better understanding between town and country, and there should be scope to extend this work during the next three or four months. A committee was appointed to co-operate with the Farmers’ Union in entertaining the party of Empire farmers, due in the Waikato shortly.
Since January 27 the trustees of the Herbert Smith Fund have donated £9O toward trophies to the following bodies:—North Shore and Whangarei Swimming Club, East Tamaki Sports Club, Raetihi Sports and Beautifying Association, Tauhei School Committee, Rongotea Girl Guides, and the Campbell’s Bay, Pukemiro, Waimauku and AVaitara Schools.
Cadets of the Hamilton High School numbering about 200 and eight officers commenced six days’ “barracks” at the Ngaruawahia Camp yesterday. Captain S. E. Senior is 0.C., and the training is being supervised by Lieut. Barry, area officer. About 130 cadets and two officers of the Pukekohe Technical High School will be in camp during the same period. Under the scheme of the Auckland Rotary Club, whereby a committee has been appointed to take an interest in the activities t-f outside clubs, Air. F. Leonard, chairman of the committee, addressed Hamilton Rotarians on international relationships at yesterday’s luncheon. He emphasised the need for individual Rotarians promoting in a humble way the cause of world peace and the fostering of understanding and goodwill between nations.
The warmest day in Hamilton this year was last Alonday week, February 3, when the temperature registered--83.8 degrees in the shade. Last Sunday was the next hottest, with 82.8 degrees. There has been no rain for 16 days.
Local motor traders treated inmates of the Salvation Army Children’s Home to a motor drive to Cambridge last Saturday afternoon. An enjoyable time was spent at the Cambridge Domain, where dainties were provided and the children spent an enjoyable time on the slide, swings and roundabout.
