GREAT SOUTH ROAD
IMPROVEMENTS DELAYED WAIKATO BRIDGE SCHEME From Our Own Correspord ; ? HAMILTON, Today. Although the Waikato County Council has labour and plant ready to start reconstructing the Great South Road between Huntly and Ohinewai, the work is delayed because the Highways Board insists that it. be done by contract. At today’s council meeting, Mr. A. A. Woodward, the engineer, said could not understand the board's altitude. which was not much encouragement to other local bodies to get permanent work done on the main South Road. The engineer was authorised to seek an urgent reply from the board. If no reply, or the reply is unfavourable, the council will ask tile board to call for tenders and itself finance the work. Approval of the proposal to construct a second traffic bridge over the Waikato at the northern boundary of Hamilton was expressed by members. A deputation of ratepayers headed by Mr. J. Primrose urged the question on the council, and the opinion was expressed that difficulty would be experienced in getting the whole eounty to vote for a loan pi'oposal. If the county’s proportion was fairly small, money could be obtained from the general account. Mr. T. Hinton, chairman, said the discussion showed that all w-ere in favour of the bridge and recognised its vital importance to the county. The cost would not be great and the county should be able to make amicable arrangement with other contributing bodies. A committee was reappointed to aci at the next conference to advance the scheme.
