HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated February 8, from the High Commissioner for Xew Zealand. London: —• Tallow. —The market is steady, with a moderate demand lor good mixed and inferior sorts. At the auction this week 680 packages were offered and 278 were sold. Present quotations for spot are: Mutton, fine, 40s to 41s a cwt; fair to good, 36s 6d to 395; dark to dull, 34s Gd to 355. Beef; Sweet and or mixed, 37s Gd to 41s Gd; lair to good, 3os to 38s; dark to dull, 33s Gd to 34s Gd. Gut, etc.. 31s to 34s 3d a cwt. Apples.—There is a steady trade. ancl Nova Scotian are sell*ing more freely. American: Oregon Newton, 14s to 17s; Stayman’s. Winesap, 9s to 12s. The wool sales closed on February 6. After the opening relapse competition widened on more buying orders, and toward the close withdrawals decreased. Offerings were cleared much better and prices hardened. Compared with the closing rates of the last series finest Merino were 7i to 10 per cent, lower; other Merino and Xew Zealand crossbred, greasy and slipe, 15 to 20 per cent, lower. Average closing values are; G4's super, Is 3d to Is 5d a lb (nominal); average, 9&d to a lb (nominal); 56’s to 58’s, Is Id to is 4d; 50’s to 56’s, Is Old to Is 3d; 48’s to 50’s, lid to Is Id; 44’s to 46’s, lOld to Hid; 36’s to 40’s, 9id to lid. The total offerings wero 127,000 bales, of which 94,000 were sold, the Home trade taking 51,000 bales, the Continent 42,00©, and America 1,000. On the basis now established the market is firm. The next series will commence on March 18* Hemp.—The Manila market is easier, but low grades are steady. “J 1 ’ grade, February-April shipment, is quoted at £32 10s sellers. The sifial market is steady. Fair average quality Xo. 1, January-March shipment, is quoted at £33 15s to £34; good marks. 10s more; Xo. 2, £32 10s to £32 15s; good marks, £33 10s. Forward shinmen ts are sparingly offered at an advance of 10s to 15s. The Xew Zealand market continues dull, with more offering, but buyers are holding back. Nominal comparative closing values are: February-March shipment, high fair, £32 10s; fair, £2B 10s; common, £27 ss. Tow. second grade, £2O 10&third grade. £l7.
