SHIP ON FIRE
CARGO ON BOARD FROM AUCKLAND SYDNEY, Today. The ..steamer Maimoa, which is on fire, is anchored in the roadstead at Fayal in the Azores. The fire was extinguished by gas. The latitude and longitude given in the cablegram shows the ship’s position 500 miles north of the Azores. The Maimoa is a vessel of 8,011 tons, and was built at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1920. This is the vessel’s seventeenth voyage since she was built, and she has on board about 10,000 tons of New Zealand produce, which was loaded at Bluff, Wellington, New Plymouth, Auckland, and Napier. She was dispatched from Napier f«>r London, via Panama, on January 6. Contain J. Johnston is the master of the vessel. The No. 3 hold, which is on fire, contains the following cargo from Auckland: Eight casks of pelts, 70 casks of tallow, 112 barrels of fat, 55 casks of stearine, and 13 empty cylinders. Additional cargo loaded at Auckland, but stowed in other holds, comprised 22,365 boxes of butter, 4,792 crates of cheese, 1,183 quarters of beef, and 24,000 carcases of mutton. Tho steamer’s full cargo comprises: Wool, S.BSG bales; frozen meat, 57,567 carcasses; butter. 41,737 boxes; cheese, 17,741 crates; tallow, 312 casks ; pelts, 103 casks; casings, 26 casks; casings. 436 sacks; skins, 207 bales; skins, 16 casks; stearine, 55 casks: hides, 120 sacks; hemp, 152 bales; fat, 104 barrels; lard, 8 barrels; kauri gum. 88 sacks; kauri gum. 25 cases; cylinders. 60; tow, 158 bales; sundries, 20 packets. The Napier portion of the cargo consists of 7,761 bales of wool, 23.905 carcases of frozen meat, 127 casks of tallow, and general cargo.
