READY TO LEAVE

BYRD’S POLAR PARTY CLEARING UP BROKEN ICE DANGERS By RUSSELL OWEN Copyrighted, 1928, by the “New York Times” company and the St. Eouis “PostDispatch.” All rights for publication reserved throughout the world. Wireless to the “New York Times.” BAY OF WHALES, Sunday. The men in our camp are all smiles. Hammering and sawing is proceeding all over the place and everything is in readiness for the arrival of the City of New York on Wednesday. The work of getting our material out to the ship will be hard because of the broken condition of the ice in the bay. There are pressure ridges and cracks all over it and it is difficult sometimes to prevent valuable things sliding into the water. We are in tents now so that everything can be moved with the least possible delay. The southerly blizzard died out last night and now it is blowing from the east.

It will be wonderful to see our old ship again and to receive our mail.
