Royal Silk’s False Price
CHIEF EVENT TO HAROLD THORPE
Special to THE SUE CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. OX a lightning track and in fine weather, the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club staged its one-day summer fixture at Addington today. The attendance was good and speculation keen, although tlie totalisator showed a small decrease on last year. The figures were: 1929, £31,033; 1930, £30,146.
Backers of favourites had an off-day, and it was only in the two events for straight-out trotters that the best supported candidates, Admiral Bingen and Ukulele Lady, pulled punters out of the fire. Harold Thorpe, at a fine figure, came with a great rattle in the final stages of the Midsummer Handicap to head off the consistent and unlucky Jean McElwyn, who added further to her remarkable record of seconds. Omaha put up a surprising performance v hen he led the field home in the Papanui Handicap, registering 4.24
2-5 for the journey. Royal Silk, the outsider of the four runners in the Champion Three-Year-old Handicap, never gave his opponents a chance, and Avon in fine style. John Jinks, who finished third, established a new' mile and a-half record fur pacers of this age, registering 3.20.
The consistent place-getter, Rolex, at last favoured Owner-trainer McDermott with a win, and the same reinsman scored in the Juvenile Handicap with Brin’s Pointer. King Pointer, who had raced prominently in the big handicap, came to light in the final event, cutting Talent out of the main dividend. This was King Pointer’s first success for some time. A revieAV of the racing, together with notes, is appended: Backers Start Well Admiral Bingen was made a very hot favourite for the Spreydon Handicap, and justified the confidence placed in him by sproadeagling his field, winding up the journey in 3.24 1-5 from a 3.31 mark. He stayed on in approA’ed style today, and is evidently improving in stamina with age. Nelson Ata outclassed Mount Royal in the run down the; straight, and of the others Boneta did best. Trampcrisp lost his chance through faulting at the start, and Jock Bingen broke, losing his position with a furlong covered. Koro Peter trotted a fine race. A Smart Juvenile Automatic, on the strength of his Wellington running, was elected a strong favourite for the Juvenile Handicap. confined to three-year-olds. He was slow away, and the hot pace set by Erin’s Pointer for the last mile save him no chance of making up leeway. Silverv ood showed a lot of speed in the last half mile, but Erin’s Pointer went right away when challenged. Flossie Harvester came along to head Dusolina. and Desert Key for third. King’s Cup faltered about two and a-half furlongs from the post, and Sodium and Pageant D’Or ran into him, and had to be pulled up. Harold Thorpe’s Success Lindbergh was installed a £SOO better favourite tham Concliff for the Midsummer Handicap. He was slow away, but made up his handicap very fast, covering a good deal of exti'a ground on the outside, which landed him in charge from Harvest Child. Harold horpe, Athalone, Jean McElwyn. Linkman and King Pointer. The first uarter was run in 36 3-5, mile in 2.15 md mile and a-half In 3.22, so that ■he last half was left behind in 1.4 1-5. Lindbergh gave way to Jean McElwyn ha.f-way up the final stretch, and just when It appeared that she was to have number hoisted on top for a change. Harold Thorpe came on the scene to collar and beat her by half f ength. Lindbergh was a similar distance away third, and was attended by Linkman. King Pointer, Billy Sea and Wrackler. Qualifying for Cup Omaha registered a fine performance to the call of M. Holmes, when ne tramped inside New Zealand Cup ysures and won easily from Great and Hector’s Own in the Papa- ?” andica P- The track was very but the performance did not lose anything i n merit as a result of this, lector s Own avqs responsible for the •ast clip, and it did not surprise when siie faded out after piloting Omaha, »reat Logan and Sir Author into the straight. Arikitoa had every chance ;l fairly good beginning, but did ot stay out the journey, and Sir Author was another that felt the pinch toward the close.

and made a new record of 3.20 for three-year-olds. A Stern Struggle Rolex was unfortunate enough to go better than 4.37 at Timaru and then get beaten by Cyone, but he stayed on in game style in the Liverpool Handicap today, and turned the tables on Cyone in the last few strides. Kreisler stayed surprisingly well, and at one stage of the final tussle between the placed horses he looked a AA'inner. Avonwood faded out very fast after leading into the straight. Kid Logan turned round at the start, and Rey Logan and Fair Wave did not move away. Hooper Has a Turn Kingcraft, hot favourite for the Craven Handicap, got away well, but did not show much brilliance, and was beaten into fifth place. Away led Talent for six furlongs, when the latter went out from him, and was followed into the straight by King Pointer, Bonny Logan and Linkman. King Pointer, finishing full of running, beat Talent by nearly two lengths, with Bonny Logan one and a-half lengths away third.
