AUSTRALIAN TIMBER
HIGH SOFTWOOD DUTY OPPOSED Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The representatives of the Master Timber Merchants’ Association waited upon the Federal Assistant Minister of Industries, Mr. F. M. Forde, with a reques: that the duty on softwoods should not be increased, eis sought by the country sawmillers. It was pointed out that increased importations of softwoods would lead to a greater demand for Australian hardwoods. The Minister replied that he would consider the representations. He could not say when the Tariff Board could deal with the inquiry upon the subject, owing to congestion in the tariff matters before it.
