MORRINSVILLE NOTES

The number of consumers connected with, the Thames Valley Power Board’s mains now total 7,210. Mr. G. D. Hattaway has resigned from the position of accountant of the Thames Valley Power Board to accept a position with the Hutt Valley Power Board. The position will be filled by Mr. A. E. Ross, another member of the staff. Arrangements for entertaining the party of British, South African and Canadian farmers, who will visit Morrinsvill© in the course of their tour of New Zealand this month, were discussed at Thursday evening’s meeting of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce. On the motion of Messrs. Cargill and Wyatt, the chamber agreed to co-operate with the Farmers’ Union in arranging for the visit of the British farmers. The opinion was generally expressed that a visit to the Horticultural Show would provide the visitors with an excellent opportunity of seeing what the district could produce, and would be splendid publicity for the district.

Tlie need for a second constable at Morrinsville was again discussed by the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce at its meeting on Thursday evening, when letters were received from two country residents, who complained that they had. sought the assistance of the constable on January 15, and found he was absent from the town on duty. They asked that provision be made for a second constable to attend to urgent complaints during the,, absence of the other policeman. Mr. F. Lye, M.P., said ho had brought the question before the Minister of Justice. Morrinsville was an important railway junction, and there was a tremendous amount of work for one policeman. It was decided to forward a letter on the subject to Mr. Lye to lay before the authorities.

At this week’s meeting of the Tauhei Drainage Board, Mr. H. C. Palmer resigned as a member of the board, and later in the meeting was appointed superviser of the board’s drains. It was decided to call tenders for clearing approximately 30 miles of drains in the board’s area.

In reply to an inquiry from the Thames Valley Power Board regarding the nature of a grub found in many power board poles, Mr. A. Castle, entomologist of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, has written: “The specimen, zeuzera boisduvalu, is an injurious insect. It is # unlikely that the specimens will become established in New Zealand, owing to a marked difference in climatic conditions. Though eggs have been deposited in large numbers in Wellington, no caterpillars have emerged. The latter attach living trees.
