VALUE OF TOURISTS

MINISTER AT WAITOMO

IMPROVEMENT IN HAND From Our Own Correspondent TE KUITI, Thursday. “Some people consider that too much money is spent on the tourist traffic of the Dominion, but when I tell you that the tourist ship Malolo left £IO,OOO in New Zealand during its visit last year, it will be realised that we have a valuable asset in our tourist resorts.” So said the Minister in Charge of Tourist Resorts, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, during his official visit of inspection of the Waitomo Caves on Wednesday evening. The Minister expressed satisfaction with the management there. He said arrangements were being made to acquire a property close to the Waitomo, Hostel for use as a golf links, and it was expected these would be available next season. A bowling green was being laid out, and three" tennis courts are under construction. The aim of the department was to induce visitors to remain at the caves for some time, and this could only be achieved by providing additional attractions. Motor service companies, hotelkeepers and others were working harmoniously with the department, and this year it was certain that the tourist traffic would be a record for the Dominion. The party left Te Kuiti for the South by the second express on Wednesday night. _______________
