The Hawk Shows Them the Way to Go
POPULAR CUP VICTORY
PAGANELLI BACK TO FORM Special to THE SUN NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. The racing at New Plymouth today was held in glorious weather, on a course in first-class condition. There was a popular demonstration when The Hawk won the Taranaki Cup. Totalisator receipts were £21,422% a decrease of £4285. Royal Acre did not contest the Waitara Hurdles owing to knocking himself in work at Hawera on Wednesday. He might compete on the second day, and if he does he will be hard to beat. Waitara Hurdles Whenuanui won well today, due somewhat to IT. Dulieu's good handling. The unlucky runner was Borsalene, who covered much unnecessary ground, vivo was not prominent, but might improve. Ngamotu Juvenile There is no doubt Acora’s success in the Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap hinged largely on her good position at the barrier. This counteracted her substantial weight. Blue Paper was never able to get to her and Hard Words had to cry enough when the whips were cracking. Rose Lupin ran a fair race and so did Belle Star and I’m Alone. Flying Handicap Paganellrs success in the Flying Handicap also was due to his having drawn the rails. He was always in front, but hung on only just "long enough after running a great race all the way. Silvermine ran his best race for some time, finishing strongly. Lady Quex drew a wide marble and was always Avell out from the fence. Eaglet ran below form and Benzora was not quite ready. Leitrim was not good enough on the day and Ridgemount was last to leave the barrier. Moturoa Electric The smash in the Moturoa Electric Hack marred the race. Of those who fell Cyrielle was going well at the time. The winner, Perennis, did well to win. She was not one of the first to get. going and her rider was at work on her a long way from home. Royal V isitor finished very nicely. J. Barry and C. Gouldsbro were unhurt ill the smash. G. Sandilands broke a collarbone and K. Voitre broke both arms. Taranaki Cup The victory of The Hawk was one of the most popular ever scored on the course, where he had already been successful in the Taranaki Stakes. The slow pace played into his hands. Vertigern was unlucky in that he did not move when The Hawk did. Yoma was expected to be in the money and ran a great race*. Pegaway was never dangerous, Bright Glow was not good enough, Corinax got a bad run, and Lucy Rose was knocked right back late in the contest.
Okato Hack Handicap The unlucky horse of the Okato Hack Handicap was Grecian. Dolomite secured the rails entering the back, and running one of his best races, was always going like a winner. Latakia was asked to do a lot and ran a good race in the circumstances. Mimi High-weight The dividend returned by Red Fuchsia was exceptionally large, but he won on his merits. The Swell made a great bid for victory, just failing. Marjoram was unfortunate in the running. Manly had every chance and failed. Tenacre ran a fair race. Timaru Hack Havaspofs failure in the Timaru Hack Handicap was the costliest failure of the day. He had his chance and failed. Te Iloia finished on well but had too much to do from the home turn. * Following are the results: Waitara Hurdles, of £200; about miles.—B Whenuanui, 0.4, H. Dulieu, 1: 2 Borsalene, 9.5, I’. WHAKATANE CLUB The adjourned general meeting of the Whakatane Placing Club was held at Te Teko, Mr. W. H. Semmens presiding. A letter was received from the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club agreeing to lend their course for this year’s meeting, and offering to assist in any way possible. A long discussion took place on the question of holding the meeting outside the district. Finally a motion was carried that the meeting be abandoned for this year, and that a canvass of the district for support for next year be made. The following officers were elected: Messrs. C. E. Macmillan and K. S. 'Williams, M.P.’s; president, Mr. ™ Semmens; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. Garlick, A. Ashby, T. B. Dunderdale and E. Sullivan; judge, Mr. . F. Moody; starter, Mr. A. Symons; clerk of scales, Mr. A. Luttrell; clerk of course, Mr. T. 'Webster; lion, surgeons. Drs. Appleby and McMiken; handicappers, Messrs. W. Shepherd, L. Penny and S. H. Tippett; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Moody; timekeeper, Mr. K. Gunn: stewards, Messrs. G. C. Peebles, T. Garlick, F. J. Hayward, S. H. Tippett, T. Mitchell, L. Penny. J. Thom, W. Thom, W- Sullivan, E. Hall, W. Howat, C. Eivers, W. Robinson and W. Duncan; judicial committee. Messrs. W. H.’ Semmens, J. Moodv, T. Mitchell, A. Hall and W. Howat. A Disappointment As a two-year old Motere was highly thought of, and when he went into retirement for the winter the connections of the horse had designs on classic engagements this season. But Motere has been a consistent failure, and he now occupies a place at the bottom of the handicaps. He is to carry silk in the Matamata Hack Cup tomorrow, and invariably a slow beginner. the mile and a-quarter should suit him nicely, while he will be going strongly when others have had enough. Has Shown Pace A three-year-old claiming a dual engagement at Matamata tomorrow is The Sun, by Sun Cure from Persian - ello, owned and trained at Matamata by Mrs. A. Yarrow. He figures on the minimum in both the Matamata Hack Cup and Okoroire Handicap, but the latter is seemingly the race decided on. The Sun was brought to Ellerslie on New Year’s Day for the G.N. Derby, but he was actually whipper-in, although for the first six furlongs he was out clear by himself, showing sufficient pace to ensure his proving useful in moderate company. Tomorrow’s field in the 85 furlongs is not overstrong, and The Sun has his | chance.
