DISCOVERY IN LONDON CELLAR

MELBOURNE’S FIRST BISHOP Recti. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. Mr. J. B. Merrett, a Melbourne resident, while searching in a London cellar, discovered a large dustcovered leather case, in which were the letters patent, dated 1847, of the Archbishop of Canterbury creating Dr Charles Perry the first Bishop of Melbourne. Three perfectly preserved parchments, beautifully adorned, proclaim. That the town of Melbourne shall henceforth be a city called the Citv of Melbourne. The cathedral church will be called St. .lames.” A great huge brown wax, slightly chipped, privy seal, depicting Queen Victoria enthroned, is attached to the parchments.
